Line dancing for seniors helps local dance studio create community

Line dancing for seniors has helped KYnamics Dance and Fitness Studio leave a mark on their community.

The studio offers a variety of classes, from line dancing to belly dancing, the doors wide open for both first-time and experienced students.

Owner Yovana Russell says it all happened thanks to “a bit of self-discovery.” She had been looking for ways to help seniors continue to be active, and naturally with her love for music, she started teaching dance in retirement homes.

Though three years ago Russell moved to Nova Scotia, and she says couldn’t even begin to process what it would it mean to close the Cambridge studio.

“It was not about the business,” she said.

“It was about the participants, the students, the people, the members.”

Studio director Ricel Da Silva began as a student in belly dancing around four years ago. Not long after, Da Silva was diagnosed with breast cancer.
